On September 23, 1954 a small group of Winthrop Harbor businessman met to establish an organization that would help the community, be service to the less fortunate as well as give them enjoyable social contacts.  These men met with representatives of different organizations in other towns and it was unanimously agreed that the community's needs could be best answered with a Lions Club.  A Past District Governor from Lake Zurich, Lion Stan Sebby, met with his group and it was agreed that the Lions of Lake Zurich would sponsor the Winthrop Harbor Lions Club while the Lake Forest Lions would serve as co-sponsors.

On November 17, 1954 the first charter night was held and the Winthrop Harbor Lions Club was chartered with 74 members.

Through the years the Winthrop Harbor Lions Club have been involved in many projects such as carnivals, steak and egg breakfasts, Jubilee Days, Candy Days, blind fishing, blind road rallies, Toys 4 our Tots, Leader Dog, he Zion Library, Juvenile Diabetes, Scholarships, Playground equipment, street signs, Fire department equipment, Police department equipment, Easter egg hunt, Children's Christmas party, Winthrop Harbor Scouts, Zion Benton Children's Services, P.A.D.S., Special Olympics and Muscular Dystrophy, to name a few.  Through these efforts, contributions of millions of dollars have been made to serve the community and further Lionism around the world.
